In the late 18th century, the powerful 77-foot cascade drew the attention of Alexander Hamilton, who recognized the site’s extraordinary potential to power industry in the young nation. Hamilton helped establish the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, envisioning Paterson as America’s first planned industrial city powered by the energy of the falls.

Throughout the 19th century, the water rushing through this dramatic basalt gorge powered mills, factories, and textile production that helped drive the early American economy. The historic iron bridge that spans the falls today reflects this legacy, symbolizing the meeting of natural force and industrial ingenuity.
