Constructed in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, during the height of the Roman Empire, the aqueduct was built to transport fresh water from the mountains nearly 10 miles (16 km) to the city of Segovia. Remarkably, the structure was assembled without mortar, relying instead on precisely cut granite blocks that have remained standing for nearly two thousand years.

Rising almost 100 feet (28 meters) at its highest point and composed of more than 160 arches, the aqueduct remains one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world and is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
