"Death, Answered" is a fine art composite photograph of the Katyń Memorial — a 32-foot bronze figure of a Polish soldier stabbed through the heart with a bayonet, his body arched in agony, his face tilted toward heaven. Created by Polish-American sculptor Andrzej Pityński, the monument commemorates the 1940 Katyn massacre, in which Stalin's secret police murdered thousands of Polish Army officers in the forests of Russia.

In this image, the sky has cracked open above him. The soldier's face is turned upward toward the bolt, his hands bound behind him, his body twisting not in the final moment of violence but in the first moment of release. This is not a photograph of suffering. It is a photograph of transcendence.
